Pens

Everyday Rebellion is an artwork viewed as a small act of creative resistance by the artist. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, many banks have now placed free boxes of biros in their premises to avoid sharing pens between staff and customers. The artist has printed biros with the question: “Will this be recession part 2 or do we fight back?” The custom designed biros are unofficially being added to the boxes of biros in banks around Dublin city for customers to take.

In September 2020, it was announced that the Irish economy has contracted by more than 6%. Recording two consecutive quarters of negative economic activity, the country has officially entered recession. During the last recession, the Irish State poured billions of euros into saving the banks, with the burden of debt firmly placed on ordinary people. Inequality has grown and the Irish public continue to feel the effects of the last recession – from an underfunded education system, to the housing crisis and a failing health system. The text message on the biro acts both as a question and a challenge to the public to fight back.
